Yoo Hoo

Once upon a time, an acquaintance turned to me during a casual conversation and said, "You probably like Yoo-Hoo, don't you?" Uh, well, er … not wishing to be contrary, or, worse, look stupid, I nodded my head and agreed. "Why yes," I said, "I do like Yoo-Hoo."

Never having even tasted the drink. Ahh, the depths to which I will sink to be Popular. This was years ago, and here I am, still scarred about the whole thing. Well, I finally lost my Yoo-Hoo virginity only one short hour ago.

Unlike other first times, this one was silky sweet and smooth, deeply chocolate-y, but not overwhelmingly so. Because the drink is so thick, it needs to be shaken early and often, even if you set it down for a few minutes. Otherwise you end up with a thick chocolate sludge at the bottom and whatever constitutes the liquid portion of Yoo-Hoo.

I liked the taste, and the fact that it's labeled as 99% fat free and 100% cholesterol free. The only thing I didn't like is that it's so thick that it leaves both a mucous-y residue and a slightly bittersweet aftertaste (I promise, no more jokes about my "first time").

But as a once-in-a-while treat when you're trying to convince yourself that you're eating healthy by not getting coffee, Yoo-Hoo is perfect.
