hang a little child, now

Eric says:
The latest installment in our more-than-a-decade-old 'Good Times' lyric saga –

Backstory: Long ago, Ryan and I used to play the theme song from 'Good Times' over and over, trying to identify the lyric that sounded like Hangin' and a' jivin' … or Hangin' in a chow line … or, as our most extreme interpretation had it, Hang a little child, now.

Fast-forward to '99 when we were recording the song for Century of Song: I actually emailed Marilyn Bergman (co-writer of the song, and now president of ASCAP) to get the correct lyric straight from the source. Surprisingly, she wrote back and confirmed the line as: Hangin' in and jivin'.

So last week I bought the first season 'Good Times' DVD set and printed on the inside of the box are the full lyrics to the song, in large, bold typeface, and there it says: Hangin' in a chow line!

Clearly someone hasn't done their fact-checking. It is sort of sad that we were more meticulous with our Century research than the people who actually produced the commercial box set for the TV show itself.

Er, I guess it's even more sad that I care. Oh well.

By the way: Delay, delay, delay, but Centurybox is on its way. Soon, soon, we promise!
