A British coworker introduced me to Artie Shaw's Gramercy Five band. To my surprise, I was immediately hooked, not only 'cause it's well-written/played swing, but Shaw's inclusion of Johnny Guarnieri on harpsichord gives the band a sound unlike any other hot jazz. Er, I think you can call this 'hot jazz', right? Just typing 'jazz' didn't feel right, although me calling current listening favorite 1970 Keith Jarrett 'jazz' would probably still make Dick Buckley break out in boils.
I honestly don't know the rest of Artie Shaw's canon, but highly, highly recommended is the above '56 compilation of the G5 40's ep's. Although all the material (I believe) is available on this crap looking '89 Bluebird release, someone please reissue this album with restored artwork. Hardcore Japanese completists, hear my rallying cry.
