Pie Fight '69 (2000)
Directed by Christian Bruno and Sam Green
I don't like to call things "offbeat," but that's the right word for Pie Fight '69, a very short (seven minutes!) documentary about a pranksterish group of filmmakers (including Peter Schickele!) who stage a costumed pie-fight on the red carpet of the 1969 San Francisco International Film Festival. The snooty festival-goers are flummoxed, as are the police, and even the participants seem a bit confused as to what it is they're trying to accomplish.
It's charmingly inconsequential, but nicely captures a forgotten countercultural moment, especially given the bemused narration by one of the pie-fighters, who seems pleased that anyone might bother to assemble a film about this not-very-crazy event. Apparently filmmakers Bruno and Green made this after being given the long-lost original footage, which someone found in the trash!
