Great Steak & Potato Co.
904 Hawthorn Center, Vernon Hills, IL, USA

Go to the Hawthorn food court at any time and you'll see the same scene—dozens of people linking up in front of Panda Express, Taco Bell, and the other usual suspects, but no one will be visiting the Great Steak. What fools! That's like walking past Jesus Christ and not noticing him.

I think I went in with the assumption that every Great Steak would provide the exact same experience, as if the Borg opened up a restaurant chain. This is not so. The Hawthorn Great Steak is just a shade below Northbrook Court's, but still provides immense gratification.

A few things went wrong with this one that force me to drop it from Golden Tooth status. First, the bun was well below Great Steak standards. It was not fresh and chewy, but it was still better than most. Second, they do not accept credit cards. At a shopping mall, I would think this would be available without a second thought. Third, the guy who took my order didn't seem to understand that I did not want cheese with my fries. I repeatedly said "no cheese," which resulted in him handing me a cupful of cheese.

It's not like the visit was ruined – I mean, a Great Steak is a Great Steak, and every Great Steak is a goddamn Great Steak. It's like a Kevin Costner movie. I mean, they can't all be The Postman, you know?
