Franz Ferdinand
Darts of Pleasure
(Domino Recording Co. 22)

Fifteen more minutes fame from Franz Ferdinand – the sexyindierockboy anthem "Darts of Pleasure" ("You can feel my lips undress your eyes!"), plus two b-sides ("Von Tango" and "Shopping For Blood") and a couple of demos ("Tell Her Tonight" and "Darts").

"Von Tango" is a funky strutter that sort of sounds like these guys' idea of The Meters, with a very Linda McCartney synth line in there; "Shopping For Blood" sounds sort of like they're making fun of "Texas Radio and the Big Beat" by The Doors, or maybe "Mexican Radio" by Wall of Voodoo, or Andy Prieboy's cover of "On the Road Again" by Canned Heat … none of which is a very likely target, come to think of it.

The demos are roughshod, but a nice alternative to overplaying the album, which I've certainly been doing. "Darts of Pleasure," incidentally, starts out in a seductive Duran Duran "Late Bar" kind of mood, but winds up sounding like the "Kids in the Hall" theme by Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet!

More, please.
