Franz Ferdinand
Matinée
(Domino Recording Co. RUG176)

More Franz Ferdinand? Okay!

The single for "Matinée" contains that song (which sounds like Duran Duran playing The Strokes' bar mitzvah) plus two acoustic tracks: "Better in Hoboken" (titled "Jacqueline" on the album) and "Forty Feet." The acoustic versions are nicely subdued, showing that the songs still work marvellously stripped of the rock-disco approach. "Forty Feet" is almost jazzy, even.

Reminds me of the way the Pixies could pare down songs like "Wave of Mutilation" and, with quiet confidence, show that they were capable of many more layers than you initially gave 'em credit for. Franz Ferdinand is here to stay! At least for the summer.
