Howard's Famous Bacon & Avocado Burgers
When you first catch sight of Howard's marvellous marquee, you might think any of a number of things: • "Howard's famous—he just landed a pilot on The CW! Now, who's up for Bacon & Avocado Burgers?" • "Ooh! This place sells that famous Howard's brand bacon, and ALSO avocado burgers!" • "Howard's Bacon & Avocado Burgers MUST be famous—for this sign tells me so in so many words!" That's the power of a good sign in this town. Just ask Angelyne. You also might just think, "Cool sign! And I'm hongry! Let's eat at there right now!"
Howard's has been around since 1971, and claims to have originated the bacon-and-avocado combination that some consider THE California burger. (It was not, as has been erroneously claimed, invented by Kevin Bacon and Keith Avocado on the set of National Lampoon's Animal House.) Personally, I'm not sure how genuinely "iconic" this burger is, but my guess is your experience with it will be the same as mine
you'll leave thinking "That's famous?!" Sort of like meeting Edward Burns. 🤷🏽
Bacon avocado burger with cheese, chili cheese fries, and a bottle of water—$11.60. Don't get me wrong, this is a fine burger, and certainly an unadulterated example of a 1971 burger, but it's also exactly what you'd expect, no more and no less. To me, it tasted like a frozen patty fried up on an old grill and dressed like you'd do your own at any given backyard barbecue, provided the host was providing avocado slices, in which case, who's Mr. Moneybags, and does he have a friend for me?!
