I like Andrew Gold's music. In fact, I probably prefer his most excellent Wax UK singles (Bridge To Your Heart, Right Between The Eyes) to his solo stuff (Thank You For Being A Friend, et al), but when he's 'on', there's generally decent songcraft afoot - and the fact that his material gets used for TV themes is an unlikely coincidence. He even did a faux 60's alter-ego jaunt ala The Dukes Of Stratosphear, which, while home studio-y, has a definite charm. Best song off of that was 'King of Showbiz', which is available on a worthwhile singles collection release amazingly by Elektra themselves, and not done in collaboration with Rhino Records. Oh wait, I just verified ... Rhino DID put it out.
That said, both Eric & I have never figured out if his 1977 single 'Lonely Boy' is one long shaggy dog story - perhaps hinted at by the pick slide right before the last verse. I'm a sucker for the melody & piano, but the lyrics truly deliver one of the biggest anti-climaxes in pop song history. You're expecting some sort of monstrous alter-dumping or blood-spilling calamity or lifelong incarceration throughout, but all that really happens is that the main character is a wussy kid who's disappointed of losing his 'only child' status when he gains a sister. Then later he watches her get married & have a son who MIGHT end up being a 'lonely boy' as well. Huh?? Maybe he wrote the song as a flippant demo entitled 'Pansy Boy', but the label forced the change.
