El Famous Burrito
7236 McHenry Rd, Wheeling, IL, USA

I originally visited this El Famous location several months ago, but never got around to reviewing it. That visit was unmemorable, and this visit did not do much to change that assessment.

I stopped in during rush hour traffic because I was hungry and wanting to get the hell off the road, and realizing I was very near El Famous, decided to give it another go.

This location is very clean and spacious, overall a comfortable environment, but the most striking thing I came away with was the notion that places that specialize in gigantic burritos only have an occasional appeal. As with anal sex and reading, you have to be in the mood for it.

I had to have them custom-make a veggie burrito for me, which ended up consisting of beans, lettuce, and onions … not the most vibrantly flavorful arrangement possible, but it did the job. Better was the large horchata, which I savor even now, thinking back upon it. The meal cost me five dollars even.

For people that do like to shamelessly feast upon flesh, the menu does feature the usual assortment of pork, chicken, beef, steak, and chorizo, so every cannibalistic urge may be met within an enormous tortilla. Potential side orders of rice, chips, churros, and tamales are always an option.

The hot sauce and salsa verde are benign but functional, and the music was fantastic. There was a Tejano version of "It Must Have Been Love" by Roxette that far eclipsed the original version .
